Field Experiences
Currently I am employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a Wildlife
Biologist in southern California. This was an advancement position from Wildlife
Specialist under the Maryland Program. I am stationed at Naval Base Ventura
County (NBVC) and am part of the Bird/Wildlife Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH)
Team at Point Mugu for both the Navy and the California Air National Guard
facilities. Basically, we protect the pilots from the birds and the birds from the
pilots! We work with a variety of avian and mammalian species; my favorite’s
being the birds of prey and coyotes.

Point Mugu Naval Base is located along one of the largest tracts of intact saltwater
marsh in California and along the Pacific Flyway for migrating birds. It is bordered
by mountains, ocean, agriculture and private duck hunting clubs. This is probably
why it is one of the top two military bases in the world for bird strike hazards!

Once a month we also venture to San Nicolas Island to conduct further wildlife
surveys. San Nicolas is a naval-owned island used as a weapon testing and training
facility, consisting of over 14,000 acres, and it is the most remote of the Channel
Islands. It’s most famous resident was the “Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island.”

As time permits I am able to assist county workers with various other wildlife-
related issues in urban, cattle ranch, and wilderness settings.

I am pursuing falconry to assist with airfield fieldwork duties as well. It entails a lot
of hard work, dedication, and involves a long process but well worth the effort if I
am going to be involved with military airfield work for a while.

While in California I am also pursuing further experience with mountain lions, and
what better place to do so! I am scheduled to enroll in a mountain lion training
course in New Mexico in 2012 as well. More information will follow here shortly.
