Sika Snapshots, Eastern Shore of Maryland: Sika deer are exotic to Maryland and are actually miniature elk. They are a little over 2 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh about 100 pounds. Native to Asian countries, sikas were released on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the early 1900s by private citizens and are a popular game animal today. They differ in many ways to the native white-tailed deer, inhabiting marshy terrain, often making a hunt quite challenging.
