Summer Internship
Bison Research Intern Sullys Hill National Game Preserve, US Fish and Wildlife Service, North Dakota, (Summer 2001)
|
During my second summer internship (2001) I interned for the U.S. Fish &
Wildlife Service at Sullys Hill National Game Preserve in North Dakota,
located in the heart of the Spirit Lake Nation. As the Bison Research Intern, I
gained experience with Geographic Information System (GIS) and Global
Positioning System (GPS) programs while recording bison use of the refuge. I
studied bison behavior within the Sullys Hill herd, assisted with a variety of
educational programs such as Kids in Nature Week and Junior Rangers, and
participated with other wildlife-related activities including bluebird surveys,
leafy spurge beetle release, periodic elk counts, and the Sullys Hill Birding &
Nature Festival. I worked in cooperation Lake Alice National Wildlife Refuge
(also in North Dakota) and participated with duck banding activities. I also
received my Hunter Safety certification from the North Dakota Game & Fish
Department. A data summary report was submitted to my supervisor and to
my college internship adviser upon completion of the bison study.
The Preserve resides on the south shore of Devils Lake and is home to
numerous migratory birds and large game. It was set aside in the early 1900s
and is comprised of woodland, savannah, prairie and wetland habitats,
covering more than 1,500 acres.
While in North Dakota I became acquainted with local Tribal members of the
Spirit Lake Nation, assisted with the field dressing of two of their buffalo bulls,
participated with tribal wildlife meetings, and attended their annual powwow.
I also did quite a bit of fishing on Devils Lake with fellow interns and toured
the state of North Dakota, visiting various points of interest.
